RUNAWAY, Part 3: “The One Who Loves Them Both” — GOING DEEPER

Luke 15:20-24

QUICK LINKS:

GOD’S LOVE MOVES TOWARD US

The Reality of Tension in Love

Many of us find ourselves caught between two loved ones who are in entirely different places in life. Whether it’s a child making poor choices or a friend who feels unappreciated while striving to do everything right, this tension can feel heavier than we expect. We often grapple with feelings of helplessness, wishing we could redirect their paths. This struggle teaches us that love, in its truest form, is not straightforward; it demands patience and compassion even when we feel stretched thin.

Unpacking the Father’s Heart

In the story of the Prodigal Son, we often focus on the actions of the two sons, but today, we need to center our attention on the Father. His love is radical and unwavering, as seen in Luke 15:20-24 when he runs to greet his wayward son with open arms, showering him with affection even before hearing his apologies. This moment exemplifies a kind of love that doesn’t react based on our behavior but instead remains steadfast and welcoming. It’s a love that goes beyond our performance and invites us to simply be who we are: His beloved children.

Grace: The Gap Between Us and Him

Psalm 103 reminds us that the Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness. The love of the Father moves through the gap created by our sins and failures, filling it with grace. Understanding this grace shifts our perspective—it’s not about what we deserve, but rather, how God chooses to respond. This love doesn’t hold our past against us; instead, it invites us into a transformative relationship where our identity is defined by who we are in Him, not by what we’ve done.

The Invitation to Surrender

God’s love calls us not to earn His affection, but to receive it freely, without preconditions. Like the Prodigal Son, many of us come back to God with a checklist of things we feel we need to fix first. Yet, the Father meets us without hesitation, longing to restore and embrace us as His own. This is a lesson in surrendering our need to control and instead trusting that His love is enough to heal and restore us, regardless of our past missteps.

Reflecting the Father’s Love to Others

As we understand the Father’s unwavering love for us, we are invited to extend that same grace to others in our lives. We must consider those who may feel distanced from us and those who diligently seek our attention. Love isn’t about choosing sides; it’s about moving toward those in need of grace and recognizing the silent struggles of the faithful. As a church community and individuals, we have a unique calling to exemplify this love, ensuring everyone feels seen and valued, regardless of their current life circumstances.
