THE GRUDGE, Part 2: Breaking Betrayal

THE GRUDGE, Part 2: Breaking Betrayal

We loved seeing everyone this weekend! Feel free to message us during the week if you have any questions. If you missed this week’s message, or want to hear it again, be sure to check out our SERMONS Page. Messages are generally posted each week by Tuesday afternoon.

Every week, it’s our goal to provide you with some questions to process the message deeper, either personally, or with a small group. Here are some questions for you to consider from part 1 of THE GRUDGE series, “I’m Just Over It”, with Pastor Shawn M. Shoup.

TALK IT OUT

Discuss these questions with someone—maybe a family member, friend, or member of your Connect Group. Use a communication method that works best for your situation.

Start talking

Find a conversation starter.

  • Define the following: betrayal, grace, forgiveness, revenge, and trust.
  • What does betrayal look like to you or in your life?
  • How does feeling small or unimportant fit with betrayal? Or does it?
  • What feelings come up when you talk about betrayal?

Start thinking

Ask a question to get you/your group thinking.

  • When betrayed, how has it affected your trust? And in whom?
  • In these situations, is it easy to forgive, or hard? Explain.
  • Do you have thoughts of revenge? Explain.

Start sharinG

Choose a question to create openness.

  • What are God’s thoughts/words on revenge and forgiveness?
  • How have your boundaries been affected by betrayal?
  • If you were to talk through the “forgiving process”, would those boundaries change? Explain.

Start praying

Be bold and pray with power.

Father,

Set me free to see the offender/betrayer as you see them. Show me how to escape the cage of hurt and revenge. Then walk with me each step of the way as I learn your ways. Thank You for showing me how You see me.

Amen and amen.

Start doing

Commit to a step and live it out this week.

  1. Ask God to reveal any betrayal you have not dealt with, and any revenge attached to it. Then ask for His help to do what is necessary.
  2. Examine your life: is there anyone you have betrayed?
  3. Ask God who you would need to forgive. Do not leave yourself off the list.
  4. Do a word study on one of the following: offense, hate, strife, love, forgiveness, patience, or one of your choosing.
  5. Ask God to show you where you need His insights, power, and wisdom the most.
  6. Talk to Holy Spirit about how He sees your life — the changes He would like to help you make — and record what He tells you.
  7. Ask for help to determine how ready and willing you are to respond to what He asks of you.
  • Pick one or two of those options and take steps to walk them out this week.
