THE GRUDGE, Part 4 : Why Can’t I Forgive Myself?

Every week, it’s our goal to provide you with some questions to process the message deeper, either personally, or with a small group. Here are some questions for you to consider from part 1 of THE GRUDGE series, “I’m Just Over It”, with Pastor Shawn M. Shoup.

TALK IT OUT

Discuss these questions with someone—maybe a family member, friend, or member of your Connect Group. Use a communication method that works best for your situation. 

Start talking

Find a conversation starter.  

  • Define: Gsuilt, shame, fault, regret
  • What may it look like to be haunted by guilt, shame, or both?
  • What would it take to stop the haunting?

Start thinking

Ask a question to get you/your group thinking. 

  • In any hurtful event, who is/may be the victim?
  • Who is truly at fault or should carry the guilt/shame?
  • What is the difference between true guilt and false guilt?

Start sharinG

Choose a question to create openness. 

  • What is the difference between guilt and shame?
  • What is God’s view of guilt and shame? Explain.
  • Why may the enemy be scared of you?
  • What does your God have planned for your future?

Start praying

Be bold and pray with power. 

Father,

Help me see that Your plans are good. Help me see the painful situations as you see them. Please enable me to see Your plans for the future are for my good. I chose to forgive myself for the lies with the resulting actions, and apply your grace to myself and others. Thank You for not leaving me while I walk through this process.

Amen and amen.

Start doing

Commit to a step and live it out this week. 

  1. Have you asked God His perspective of the hurtful situation? If not, why not now?
  2. What action(s) may you need to take?
  3. Read Luke 22:59-62. How much like Peter have you been? What would you have told Peter after he said what he did?
  4. Do a word study on grace.
  5. Read a story on how one of the patriarchs overcame an issue in their life.
  6. Talk to Holy Spirit about how He sees your life — the changes He would like to help you make. Record what He tells you.
  7. Ask for help to determine how ready and willing you are to respond to what He asks of you.
  • Pick one or two of those options and take steps to walk them out this week.
